About Me
Most of what people are taught about money, systems, and security is wrong — or at least incomplete. I built this site because I spent a lifetime in places where the stakes were real, and I learned things that textbooks and financial advisors don't tell you.
I'm Ted Lee. I'm 70 years old, based in the Vancouver area, and I've been retired long enough to finally say exactly what I think.
Professional Background
Technical Mastery
I hold a Bachelor of Technology degree from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) and a diploma in Computer Systems Management from Capilano College. I'm a director at VANLUG — the Vancouver Linux User Group — and I've been building and running my own web infrastructure for years. Technology isn't a hobby for me; it's a lens I use to understand how systems of power and control actually work.
Financial Literacy — From the Inside
I hold two financial licences: Mutual Funds and Insurance Broker. I worked as a licensed financial advisor long enough to understand how the industry actually serves itself — and how individuals can protect themselves from it. Everything on this site about money, debt, tax, and trust planning comes from that hard-won perspective.
Field Experience — Earned the Hard Way
I served with the Canadian Armed Forces as a signaller with 73 Canadian Signal Squadron (home unit: 39 Svc Bn), deployed to the Sinai Desert and Gaza Strip as part of UNEF II (October 1976 – April 1977). I am a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize — awarded collectively to United Nations Peacekeepers in 1988 — and hold both the UNEF II Medal and the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal.
I also hold a diploma in Deep Sea Diving from the Divers' Institute of Technology and a Level 3 Advanced First Aid certificate. My amateur radio callsigns are VE7LEE, VE7LE and VA7REF.
When you operate under real stakes — in war zones, underwater, in emergency situations — you develop a different relationship with risk, preparation, and truth. That's what informs this site.
Why This Site Exists
TedLee.ca is an educational hub. It covers money, privacy, Bitcoin, decentralization, trust planning, and political economy. Nothing here is investment or legal advice — it's the kind of straight talk I wish someone had given me decades ago.
Question everything. Choose freedom.

Challenges & Security
Identity theft incidents — including large-scale data leaks — have strongly influenced my approach to privacy and security. I publish actionable guides on fraud protection, secure backups, and minimizing your personal attack surface online.
Interests
I write about sustainable economics (Doughnut Economics), digital self-sovereignty, long-term habits, and communications infrastructure. My aim: help people learn by doing rather than giving rigid prescriptions.
